Yesterday (Dec. 13), in a signing ceremony on the White House South Lawn, Joe Biden signed into law landmark legislation protecting same-sex marriages. Biden signed the ‘Respect for Marriage Act’ before thousands of guests stating “Marriage is a simple proposition. Who do you love and will you be loyal to that person you love? It’s not more complicated than that.”
“For most of our nation’s history, we denied interracial couples and same sex couples from these protections. It failed to treat them with equal dignity and respect. And now, this law requires an interracial marriage and same-sex marriage must be recognized as legal in every state in the nation,” - President Joe Biden
This historic legislation protects same-sex and interracial marriages by prohibiting federal and state governments from denying the validity of a lawfully performed union on the basis of sex, race or ethnicity.
