Non-Binary Celebrity - Mae Martin

Updated: Sep 5, 2023

Mae is a Canadian-born comedian, actor, and screenwriter who is now based in England. Among their many accolades Mae wrote and starred in the Netflix comedy series Feel Good and won two Canadian Comedy Awards as part of the comedy troupe ‘The Young and the Useless’.

Mae came out as non-binary in April 2021 stating in an Instagram post -

“The way I feel about my gender identity is ongoing and evolving, and it’s personal, but I thought it might be good to say for clarity and in case anyone finds it helpful - I’m nonbinary, my pronouns are they/them and she/her (I love it when people say “they” and I really don’t mind “she” at ALL, truly).”

Mae considers herself “very bisexual and attracted to people of all genders. I experience gender dysphoria sometimes - not always! - and have done since I was a tiny kid.”

In an interview with Eva Wiseman for the Guardian Mae says, “I’m all for people identifying however they want. But I’ve found that sometimes those labels bulldoze over nuance. My sexuality is not a huge part of who I am. It’s not even a particularly interesting part. Apparently 40% of people under 25 don’t identify as gay or straight anymore.”

Last year Mae wrote a book for teenagers - a guide to 21st-century sexuality.

The book’s title is Can Everyone Please Calm Down?

“My dream is that we get to a point where we don't even need to discuss sexuality at all. Where it's a total non-issue, and everyone's falling in love with everyone all over the place. Seeing as we're not there yet, however, I think it is incredibly important to talk about it. Openly, and without embarrassment. I hope this book is a step in that direction. ENJOY.
