From April 11, 2022, U.S. citizens will be able to select an X as their gender marker on their U.S. passport applications. Applicants can select from 3 gender options and are no longer required to submit any medical documentation, even if their selected gender differs from their other citizenship or identity documents.
This addition of an ‘X’ gender marker on State Department public forms will represent “Unspecified or another gender identity.”
The intention is that this additional option will also become available for other forms of documentation as of next year.
The press release from the U.S. Department of State on March 31st states: -
“…the addition of a third gender marker for non-binary, intersex, and gender non-conforming individuals.”
“This definition is respectful of individuals’ privacy while advancing inclusion.”
